My sleep cycle is all out of whack. I’ve found it hard to keep a regular day schedule since I transitioned to writing full-time. In the past I’ve always been a night owl, and it would appear that having the freedom from outside time responsibilities, has resulted in me transition to my college sleep schedule.
It’s usually 4 or 5 AM before I fall asleep and as such I’m hard pressed to get out of bed before noon. At which point I make the family lunch, and drink a pot of french pressed coffee. I start work around 2 PM and stop around 6 PM to make dinner. By 9 PM my daughter is asleep and I’m able to edit or read, depending on how my day went.
The trouble is I’ve been highly productive on my natural schedule. However, I miss out on half the day and usually I’ve only got a four-hour window in which to write, before it’s time to cook and start getting the child ready for bed.
It’s why my goal has been to wake up at 9 AM this whole month, and most days I’ve failed. Same goes for its partner goal of going to bed before 2 AM.
I’m forced to give serious consideration to abandoning the whole experiment of waking up at 9 AM, and fully embrace my night owl tendencies. 2 AM to 5 AM, when the house is asleep and it’s dead silent outside, I have the best ideas for stories. If it weren’t for the early hours of the morning, I’m not sure I’d have stories to tell.
There was a point in my life that I’d go to bed before 8 PM and wake up before 4 AM, but that’s a worse option than staying up late and waking up at noon. I think there’s something about knowing I’m truly alone in the twilight hours, that allows my mind to wander and create new stories. There’s a level of comfort knowing I won’t be disturbed, that frees me to create.
I’ll embrace my natural sleep cycle this week, and track my productivity. If there’s at least a 30% increase I’ll consider it worth the trade-off.
