Finished chapter 3 of Sorcerer’s Trial, and it kicked my ass. This is the first point of the story where I don’t know what you write, and have to sit down and really think through the next few scenes to make sure they’re all building to the right finally. The end of this book should be a huge gut punch to my readers, but in a good way.Either way, I’ll get the book done on time; probably ahead of schedule.
I refuse to allow my fear of failure to hold me back from what I’m meant to do—write fucking books! Now that’s not to say I don’t experience fear & anxiety. In fact, anyone who doesn’t feel fear is someone to avoid. To lean into these clichés, “It’s only when we’re afraid that we can be brave.”
Self-pep out of the way. It’s time for the real business at hand. I need the fear of public shame to motivate myself to perceiver. Meaning: I’ll set my daily goals here, for all the world to see, and also report on them.
Progress Breakdown: Writing Weekly Word Count – 3,870 (4,625/54% Decrease) Editing Weekly Word Count – 54,161 (39,342/366% Increase) Week Recap: I spent the whole week on my new natural schedule, where I go to bed around 04:00 and wake up between 12:00-13:00. I decided the only way it would be worth the trade-off, is if I saw at least a 30% increase over my past performance. Given the results I’d say I did well over that. However, most of my productivity was in editing. This week I’ll be writing and editing the 2nd installment in Project Phoenix #2. Therefor I’m going to aim to write 10,000 plus words this week. If I manage to do that I’ll count it as a 30% increase for sure. I’m aiming for Project Phoenix #2, to come in around 9,000-9,500 words. Which means I’ll need to edit 18,000 plus words this week, after writing them. […]
Progress Breakdown: Writing Word Counts: Weekly Total WC – 8,811 (1809/26% Increase) Editing Word Counts: Weekly Total WC – 3,073 Week Recap: 2/5/17 – Writing went well. I’ve started my new series. Having two different stories to write between helps keep the creativity flowing. Since I’m between a plotter and a discovery writer, it’s easier for me to work on different plot issues. The new series should be easier, because I’m reworking a few short stories I wrote and turning it into a serialized series. I’m planning each book to be between 15,000 and 20,000 words. I won’t put the first out until I have the first serialized arch done. I figure a 5 or 6 book series would be ideal. 2/6/17 – Spent the day world building. 2/7/17 – Great fucking day of writing. Hit the half way point of the story and picked out the graphics for the […]
Novel Writing Sprints Breakdown: Total fingers on the keyboard time: 1 hour and 11 minutes. Total words: 1,817. Words per hour: 1,535. Writing Log: 10:03 – I just got to the library and found the right corner, where there is plenty of light, but no one should be able to look over my shoulder while I’m working. Not that someone would try, but the thought it happening would distract me. The chair setup will take a little while to get use to; it has a spinning desk top attached to the left arm of the chair which swings over, but only covers half my lap. However, any negatives aside, the quite atmosphere and lack of distractions should prove invaluable to my productivity. 10:23 – Well it worked for about fifteen minutes, but now there’s an older woman less than two feet away from me looking for books. The feeling of having […]
Novel Writing Sprints Breakdown: Total fingers on the keyboard time: 1 hour and 4 minutes. Total words: 1,202. Words per hour: 1,127. Writing Log: 09:35 – No I haven’t been up all night. I actually managed to get my ass out of bed this morning at 8:30, thanks to new habits I’m setting for myself. It was well after 4:00 in the morning, before I went to sleep last night. I suspect I’ll feel tired by the end of the day, but that’s a good thing. I need to go to bed at a decent hour, and quit staying up until all hours of the night. My agenda is quite simple today: write 2,000 words, edit 12,000 words, and post on my blog. The internet is off, and my phone is in the other room, my distractions should be minimal. I’m even on my second cup of coffee, which is […]
Novel Writing Sprints Breakdown: Total fingers on the keyboard time: 1 hour and 38 minutes. Total words: 2,743. Words per hour: 1,679. Writing Log: 12:23 – I woke up a little after 11. I’ve had breakfast and I’m on my second cup of coffee. Time to start knocking out some words, after I post to my blog. There was a glitch last night so I put it off. 12:36 – Finished uploading the post. I’ve changed where I’m writing to see if it helps me focus. I’ve also turned off my internet and placed my cell in the other room; unanimous advice from Lindsey, Joe, and Jeff last night on Science Fiction & Fantasy Marketing Podcast. (If you’ve never watched an episode you should go do that now, even if it means you stop reading this post.) The hard part with this new space, is trying to find a comfortable sitting […]
Novel Writing Sprints Breakdown: Total fingers on the keyboard time: 43 minutes. Total words: 1,201. Words per hour: 1,676. Writing Log: 12:19 – I didn’t wake up until 11:10. I feel better today and I’m already on my second mug of coffee. Today I found out about the YouTube channel Today I Found Out. () This will most likely be my new ritual for getting ready in the morning. A mug of coffee, and watching a 5 to 10 minute video about some random piece of information. 13:07 – Finished up a scene from yesterday, and now it’s time to start a bad ass scene! I’ve been looking forward to writing this scene since the middle of my last novel. Which is a long time to wait to write something. 15:24 – Progress is being made. Having to cook lunch eats away at my time. I need to start preparing […]
Novel Writing Sprints Breakdown: Total fingers on the keyboard time: 52 minutes. Total words: 1,203. Words per hour: 1,388. Writing Log: 11:34 – Finished my blog post for last week’s recap. I’m taking a few minutes to watch Youtube, and clear my head for my first writing sprint. I’m going to try and write from 12:00 to 16:30, taking 10 minute breaks between scenes. I’m also going to start writing Monday through Friday. My hope is treating the writing as a 9-5 style job, will create a habit and writing will become second nature. Thus allowing me to write more words per week. Based on the math, I only need 60 hours to write a novel. However, I can’t write for 60 hours straight. I also find it difficult to write for more than an hour at a time without taking a break. Furthermore, I can only write for 3-4 […]

Writing Log: 11:27 – I’ve already been up for an hour, and I’ve only drank one cup of coffee. Time to remedy the situation and eat. 15:02 – Caught up on reading some blogs I follow, and spent time on Kboards lurking as usual. Time to stop procrastinating. Sprint Records: Start: 15:06 – Stop: 15:08 – WC: 45 Well that was the shortest writing sprint ever. I had to deal with an upset child. So, lets try that again.
